Aunt Alice’s Goodies: Old Time Recipes We Grew Up with

$14.95

One day I started to crave peanut butter cookies the way my mother made them. Then weeks later, I had a dream about the hard fudge we used to make back in the 1950s when I was growing up on the South Side of Chicago. And what ever happened to mayonnaise cake? My psyche was trying to tell me something. And this book is the result. What my psyche has called me to do is gather my goodies into this cookbook- to pass on the recipes that my family members have used for their celebrations through many decades of the 20th century. I reviewed my dog-eared, batter-splattered recipe cards with all the chicken-scratched handwriting and decided it was time to commit these treasures to digital format. I want the next generation to delight their children and their children’s children with these old comfort sweets including home-made hard fudge, mayonnaise cake, pecan tarts, and prize-winning blueberry pie. This is a part of my culture that I don’t want to loose in the frenzy for “thin.” So here they are, my humble offerings. Indulge, delight, and good night!

Clouds for Dessert: Sweet Treats from the Wild West

$0.99

Ever taste a cloud? Or take a bite out of the Grand Canyon? What if the West could taste the way it looks? Clearly, some of the great natural phenomena would have to be spectacular desserts. And so they are, for desserts of all foods are the most open to fantasy and fun. A little kitchen magic can turn the Rocky Mountains into snowcapped sundaes, or wild, rough, piggy javelinas into ginger cookies, or even cactus into Popsicles, pancakes, and tender rosy pies. The best food of a region expresses a sense of place in a way nothing else can. This is especially true of the American Southwest. These 50 recipes express climates and geography (pomegranates and citrus from the desert, piñon nuts and apples from the mountains) as well as history and culture (Tohono O’odham saguaro syrup, Spanish flan, cowboy cake, New Mexican biscochitos, and very chi-chi nouvelle Southwest chocolate mousse pie). 24 color photographs.

Cooking with Kooshla and Saboo: Favorite Family Recipes

Aven pretends to do her cooking show at home and instructs her audiences on how to make, as she says, her “restipees” such as “Green Fish Cake” and “Corm Cheese Pie” among others. She told her mother that they needed to make a “Cooking With Kooshla and Saboo Cook Book” –so here it is! The mother and daughter team choose the family recipes, gave the dishes fun forest names, cooked the food and did the photography together. Of course the rest of family participated too by helping to eat the meals! This book is full of Huggabear favorite family receipes that your family will be sure to enjoy as well!

 Dark Dorset Calendar Customs

Dark Dorset Calendar Customs

$20.62

Much of the intrinsic charm of Dorset folklore is owed to the importance of folk customs. Today only a small amount of these curious and occasionally eccentric customs have survived, while those that still continue have, for many of us, lost their original significance. Why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday? Why do children dance around the maypole on May Day? Why do we carve pumpkin lanterns at Hallowe’en? What is Wassailing? And who is Father Christmas? All the answers are here!Robert has made an in-depth study of the Dorset country calendar identifying the major feast-days, holidays and celebrations when traditionally such folk customs are practiced. Some of these customs hark back to pre-Christian times, while others are comparatively recent innovations. The list of customs is an extensive one and includes Morris Dancing, Clipping the Church, Well Dressing, Love Divinations, Mumming Plays, Corn Dollies, Broom Dancing and many more besides. Included as a special bonus are thirty tasty seasonal recipes to try out, such as Cattern Cake, Plough Tide Dumplings and Mince Pies, to name but a few. This fascinating, easy to follow compendium is an ideal reference tool for anyone seeking a greater understanding of Dorset’s annual customs and rituals and how to enjoy them. Join in and celebrate any day that takes your fancy! We certainly will!

Ruth loves to bake cakes. When she is alone, she dreams up variations on recipes. When she meditates, she imagines herself in the warm, comforting center of a gigantic bundt cake. If there is a crisis, she bakes a cake; if there is a reason to celebrate, she bakes a cake. Ruth sees it as an outward manifestation of an inner need to nurture her family—which is a good thing, because all of a sudden that family is rapidly expanding. First, her mother moves in after robbers kick in her front door in broad daylight. Then Ruth’s father, a lounge singer, who she’s seen only occasionally throughout her life, shatters both wrists and, having nowhere else to go, moves in, too. Her mother and father just happen to hate each other with a deep and poisonous emotion reserved only for life-long enemies. Oh, yes indeed!Add to this mix two teenagers, a gainfully employed husband who is suddenly without a job, and a physical therapist with the instincts of a Cheryl Richardson and you’ve got a delightful and amusing concoction that comes with its own delicious icing. One of Jeanne Ray’s specialties is giving us believable, totally likable characters, engaged in the large and small dramas and amusements of life. Eat Cake is whimsical, warm, and satisfying. Eat Cake is Jeanne Ray at her best. Pull up a chair and eat cake!Author Biography: Jeanne Ray works as a registered nurse at the First Clinic in Nashville, Tennessee. She is married and has two daughters. Together, she and her husband have ten grandchildren. Jeanne is the bestselling author of Julie and Romeo and Step-Ball-Change.

Food Is the Frosting-Company Is the Cake: You Can Entertain Easier at Any Age

$1.99

The meat and potatoes (and to her vegetarian readers, the tofu and broccoli sprouts) of this book is about opening our front door wider and making it fun and less stressful to invite people into our home more often. With a twinkle in her eye, lifestyle expert Maggie Marshall gently escorts you through the changes of life (that one, too) and how to make adjustments to entertaining along the way. This book offers practical advice as we age, 101 tips simplifying entertaining that you don’t want to miss, short anecdotes to keep a smile on your face while helping you remember the important pointers, plus delicious recipes that can be prepared 24 hours or more in advance. The book is set up as a practical guide; Chapter 1 sets the foundation. At the end of the chapter be sure you don’t skip taking the Entertainment IQ Test (you can keep your test score a secret from your best friend, the one who makes entertaining look easy). Then browse through the Table of Contents and flip to whatever chapter “speaks to you.” If you have a young family (or a grandparent trying to pass on traditions) and want to reduce tears in the kitchen, head straight to the chapter on Cooking With Kids – Ours and Theirs. If you’re ready to host a big bash, turn to the chapter called Hotsy-Totsy Parties for help with events that require more detail when planning a celebration. Maggie’s favorite chapter is Honoring Life Events During Suffering, Illness and Loss and how to remain connected while living through some of life’s greatest challenges.

Here in the country, women grew up learning to cook before they were tall enough to reach the stove. It was the mother’s and the grandmother’s responsibility to make sure all the girls in the family could make a meal out of one strip of meat and a cup of beans. So we learned to cook. And we learned to be creative. We learned how to stretch dough across two weeks at three squares a day. We learned how to make soup from bones and old potatoes. And we learned to knead our sorrows and our dreams into loaves of bread and our worthiness into cherry pies and fatty pork chops. —from Friendship CakeGood humor, tender moments, and life lessons abound in this heartwarming portrait of small-town Southern life that is anything but simple and quiet. Five churchgoing women from Hope Springs, North Carolina, animate this humorous, poignant tale of coming to terms with one’s weaknesses, honoring the fragility of life, loving passionately, laughing through tears, and thinking with the heart. The cast of colorful characters includes: freshman pastor Charlotte Stewart, who experiences a crisis of faith; no-nonsense Margaret Peele, a widow and town confidante; sharp-tongued Louise Fisher, who has loved another woman, Roxie, for over forty years and finally gets to show it by caring for her in the last stages of Alzheimer’s; Jessie Jenkins, the only African American in an all-white church; and busybody Beatrice Newgarden, who turns out to be the most solid friend to them all.As these five very different women come together to create a church cookbook, they quickly become a source of solace, support, and strength for each other. German Chocolate Cake

German Chocolate Cake

$38.99

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! German chocolate cake is a layered chocolate cake filled and topped with a coconut-pecan frosting. Sweet baking chocolate is traditionally used for the chocolate flavor in the actual cake, but few recipes call for it today. The filling and/or topping is a caramel made with egg yolks and evaporated milk; once the caramel is cooked, coconut and pecans are stirred in. Occasionally, a chocolate frosting is spread on the sides of the cake and piped around the circumference of the layers to hold in the filling. Maraschino cherries are an added touch.
